Precast Concrete 101 - Home Remodeling

Unless you are a precast concrete manufacturer, you probably don't fully understand the difference between using concrete over other building mediums. Concrete is perfect for structural building because of its efficiency, strength, durability and resistance to the elements.

Since the days of ancient Roman builders, concrete has been used for basic structures. The Romans used concrete to build their complex infrastructure of tunnels, aqueducts and culverts. Today concrete is used for building foundations, storm and sanitary sewers, septic tanks, electrical and communications vaults and for a variety of other purposes.

Precast concrete refers to a construction process where contracts is cast in a reusable mold or form. The concrete is them cured in a controlled environment so it can be transported to the construction site and lifted to its ultimate destination. The process differs from using standard concrete, which is poured and cured on site.

Many different forms exist for precast construction based in different architectural applications. Concrete is the perfect material for safety, health and even protecting the environment. For this reason, more San Jose precast concrete contractors are using this material for projects of all sizes and functions.

Concrete is structurally sound and actually gets stronger over time, rather than deteriorating like many other building materials. The serviceable life of concrete can last up to 100 years or longer. Concrete is even resilient and durable enough to use for highway barriers.

Another benefit of concrete is its resistance to the elements. It is noncombustible and does not quickly lose its structural integrity under high temperatures. Concrete also withstands corrosive agents and chemicals. The UV rays from sunlight will not degrade the composition of concrete. From the hottest summer days to the coldest winter freeze, concrete stands up to all weather conditions.

Because precast concrete is already cured, construction is not as dependent upon the weather conditions. It takes less time to install so contractors find it easier to stay on schedule. This type of concrete can also be installed on demand.

Precast concrete is easily used for large projects because of its modular nature. All kinds of systems and structures are put together with ease. The products arrive at the job site ready to install. Its availability ensures a ready supply and fair pricing so the construction project is completed more efficiently.

Structures made from concrete are also watertight and airtight. High quality sealants are used along with seamless construction patterns so water and other airborne elements will not compromise a concrete structure.

Whether you're a homeowner or a large corporate mogul, concrete buildings and structures offer superior security and durability at an affordable price. With a variety of aesthetic options, concrete is the most versatile, reliable building medium around.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing - The Facts

Is it any wonder why almost 80% of homes in North America use asphalt shingles as the roofing material of choice. The prevalence of asphalt shingles has created a vast assortment of fittings and fixtures designed to work with them. Items such as a multitude of flashing configurations, edge products, and almost every skylight manufactured has an appropriate base configuration for a weatherproof connection with asphalt shingles. All of the material that you need for a proper installation, such as the shingles, tarpaper, nails, vent boots and chimney flashing are available at any home improvement retailer.

The primary attributes of asphalt tiles are:

  • reasonably priced (economical),
  • require very little maintenance,
  • versatile,
  • provide excellent protection on steep sloped roofs,
  • are weather and sunlight resistant,
  • easy to cut,
  • can be nailed by hand or with powered nailers.

There are two different types of asphalt shingle base material construction - composition and fiberglass. Composition shingles use a base material termed organic felt, which is a blend of paper and wood fibers. Fiberglass, on the other hand, uses a base that is comprised of a fiberglass mat. In both cases, once the base material is produced it is soaked in an asphalt compound. In numbers sold, fiberglass leads the market. They are less expensive, weigh less because they are thinner, have a longer wear life and have a better fire rating than the composition base shingles.

Average cost of a shingle roof is $50 to $150 per square, installed. Removal of old shingles will cost between $30 and $50 per square.

Both types of asphalt shingles are manufactured with embedded mineral granules. Seeing the granules in your eaves trough (after the initial installation) is a sure sign that you need to repair or replace the shingles.

Where just a few years ago asphalt shingles were only available in simple tab configurations in blacks, grays and browns, the manufacturers have expanded their product lines to include a vast array of colors, profiles and with the use of laminate coatings have created as assortment of eye pleasing textures. Special chemicals are also being blended into the shingles to make them mold and algae resistant. Although these additional features do increase the price per square, asphalt shingles are still the most economical roofing material available.

Drawbacks:

The serviceable life of asphalt shingles is the lowest of all the roofing materials. Although they are available in numerous grades designated by the expected life, from 15 to 50 years they often need repair or replacement long before their supposed life has expired. The hotter the climate, the shorter the life of asphalt shingles. Many of the asphalt shingle problems that are encountered by homeowners are a direct result of two factors:

  • poor initial installation
  • damage due to sever weather

Poor installation usually occurs in the area of deck preparation, and not providing adequate flashing around items that are protruding through the roof such as vent pipes and chimneys. Other poor installation methods are not using the required amount of nails per shingle and nailing in the wrong area of the shingle. There are many fly-by-night roofing companies that will quote low prices, because they won't be around to stand behind the workmanship. Choose a roofing contractor carefully.

Roof Repairs:

You should inspect your shingled roof and all the flashing at least once a year and after any major storm such as a hurricane. Hurricane winds will remove entire shingles and lift others. Sun and rain can cause asphalt shingles to crack. You should also go into the attic and look up, any sign of daylight means that there is a hole. When inspecting the roof look for shingles that have lost the granule minerals - bald spots, cracked and/or curled.

If you have to make a roof repair, choose a warm day so that the shingles will be flexible and unlikely to crack when lifted. The roofing cements also spread easier in warmer temperatures.

You will know when you have a roofing problem when you see beige spots appearing on ceilings and walls close to the ceiling. Beige spots are a sign of water damage.

Maintenance:

Roofing cement is the equivalent of duct tape for roofs. It will repair most leaks, cracked or torn shingles, patch flashing around vent pipes and chimneys. You can also use the roofing cement to cover nail heads that have been exposed.

Shingles fade with age so any replacement shingles used will most likely be visually obvious. Shingle over damaged ridge shingles, by nailing down all the corners of the old shingle first - do not remove them.

If you have to replace an entire shingle, lift each of the tabs and pry the nails out of the shingle of the one that needs to be replaced. Remove the top corners of the replacement shingle and very carefully, without damaging the tarpaper, slip it under the existing shingles.

Use roofing nails (large head, galvanized) to fix the new shingle to the roof decking. Use roofing cement to cover the nail heads.

Planning and knowledge are the keys to any successful home improvement, remodel or landscaping project!

Basement Makeovers

The basement is frequently the room that has the most square footage in a home. Yet, basements are frequently not always very welcoming. They can be dim and have dank and frequently they are simply treated as extra storage space. However, you can do much more with your basement than using it as a place to keep things. What is pleasant about a basement is that it can be your private space to do whatever you like. Be creative and come up with something you'd like to add to your home that can be completed in the basement.

A basement can be an exceptional location to store food. There is not much light in a basement, which is excellent for food. Having your own pantry can be very convenient. Another option is to store wine in your basement. What is enjoyable about this idea is that you can choose your favorite wines and then permit them to ferment in a spot in your home where they will not be disturbed. If you are one of the many home brew masters who like to make their own beverages, you can organize your basement to fit this purpose.

Basements can be a great escape for teenagers too, who are often happy to be in seclusion and enjoy having their own area where they can spend time with their friends and play video games. They're also a great place for teen bashes. Being underground, they're a lot less likely to disturb the neighbors. So why not fit out your basement appropriately with an upscale sound system and a luxury plasma television? This is a great way to make your kids content, and the envy of the neighborhood.

If you decide to go ahead and put a sound system in your basement, why not take it one step further and add a projector and perhaps some media chairs? This will convert your basement into a home cinema. You have the room you need to do a home theater right in a basement, and you also have the restricted light that is essential for this kind of room. This way you can turn your basement into a practical space that you and your friends will enjoy for years to come.

If you take pleasure in creative things like photography, a basement also works well as a darkroom. That way you can develop your own photos. You'll have to make sure that you have an entrance that can be restricted or has some sort of system to make sure that your darkroom is not entered at the wrong moment. You may want to also add some benches to use as a workspace. You can also add lines to hang photos to dry on. One thing you will have to do is consider the best way to add ventilation to your basement to make sure you are not breathing any harmful fumes. No matter what course you take with your basement, make sure it suits you and what you enjoy doing.

Choosing a Brick Paving Company

Adding brick pavers to your patio, driveway, or pool deck can be a great investment for your home. However, your dream patio may turn into a long, tiring, money-losing nightmare if the wrong company is chosen for your project. When choosing a Brick Paving company, you should follow some guidelines in order to have a stress-free process.

1. - Testimonials... and lots of them - When in doubt, you should look for a company that has a bunch of positive testimonials and references. Testimonials say that a person loved their work so much, he/she would write a letter or make a video saying how great their job was. Check for diverse testimonials, like for big (+1,500 sq/ft) jobs and small (-1,500 sq/ft) jobs. Videos are your best friend.

2. - ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) certified - This shows that the company knows what he's doing. The last thing you want is an amateur doing your patio, driveway, or pool deck. For something that you have to look at every day, you want an expert doing it. Saving one-hundred dollars isn't worth possibly months of stress and headaches. You want your investment to be done right.

3. - Year of Experience/Showroom - You want a company that has 'been there' and has 'done that'. Being that nothing is perfect and all humans make mistakes, you want a company that can solve any problem that you or he might face during your project. Also, a company with experience can also assist you in any question you may have. A showroom is one thing that will show you that the company is successful, professional business.

One company that incorporates all these things in his business is N. Ricardo's Brick Pavers, Inc. They do jobs around South Florida and are exactly what you need to get your project started. http://www.brickpaversflorida.com

Finding Grants for Green Construction

When it comes to new construction techniques, grants are often a way to cut costs. Federal grants for green construction are plentiful with billions literally available.

A federal grant is an award of financial assistance from a Federal agency. It is intended to carry out a public purpose or support or stimulate a purpose that is authorized by a law of the United States. Federal grants can be found and applied for electronically. The site Grants.gov is the central clearing house for Federal Grants.

There are twenty six different agencies that offer over 1,000 grant programs. The grants that apply to green construction are mostly offered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The total amount of grants available exceeds $400 billion dollars. The grants offered by the feds fall into twenty one categories. The categories that have the most impact on green construction are Energy, Environmental Quality, and Health.

Most of the grants are directed toward specific geographical areas. Some of the major concerns of the grants include water quality improvement and the prevention of urban storm water runoff. Many of the grants are connected with the Leeds certification program. Leeds stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a program that is run by the United States Green Building Council and it establishes green construction standards and awards certificates to those that maintain these standards.

Although there are federal grants available, it is on the state and local level that the large majority of grants can be found. The green movement is a grassroots type of thing that appears to be strongest at the local level. Environmental concerns are often very local, and the problems that have been caused by the neglect of the environment are local as well. The pollution of waterways is a good example of this. grant programs exist that are directed at the Great Lakes or at Puget Sound, for example. States that are bordering these waterways usually offers these grants. The idea of environmental impact areas has led to the localities that border or are inside the impact area being the best source of funds for projects that will address the problems.

Private foundations like the Kresage Foundation are among the best sources of green construction grants. The Kresage Foundation has been offering grants under their Green Building Initiative Program. It is specifically geared toward the area of planning and design. While it is true that State, local, and private foundations are the major sources of grants that can be considered pure green building, the federal government is also a source. Research is the key to finding a grant for your project, so take the time to explore the various options mentioned above.

Haul Out the Lifeboats - the Titanic is Sinking!

Sinking ships on the net are a too often found occurrence. People seeking their fortunes with misconceptions of grandeur and success are unwillingly "jumping on board" with every project imaginable without a clue on how to effectively promote on the internet.

The story goes on, "my buddy just called and he has this amazing new product, let's jump on board and make some money!" That single phrase has separated more good people from their hard earned wages than anything else on the net today. Dispel the rumor that there are ways to make "quick money" on the internet or anywhere else.

Internet marketing is exactly like offline business. Are there offline businesses where one can come in with an investment, and be making $10000 in just a few short weeks? Unequivocally...NO!

Why then, do people consistently spend money in hopes of making significant rewards on the internet. What would make internet marketing any different from an offline business? Answer...NOTHING!

The bottom line...hard truth...telling it like it is attitude is this...there are no castles in the digital air.

Time, effort, training, actually sitting and learning time-tested techniques, visualization on what is to be accomplished, and then the final act of WORKING is what is needed for success on the net.

There is, in fact, nowhere else today that potentials are greater than on the net, but most are unwilling to actually learn the significant techniques to obtain that success.

Leading people down the primrose path is steadily becoming the disenchantment of folks desiring a new life and a new approach to living. Most will fail...but taking that statement, and turning it into a success story is highly possible on the net today.

One must have the fore-sight to learn the skills that will empower them to achieve that success. One must be willing to do the time...expend the effort...learn the rules...and then for God's sake...think originally about that project and the best way to approach it, before clicking on the "I Agree" button at the bottom of the contract.

Kitchen Tables - There Are Environmentally Friendly Options

The trend today is to be as green as possible when decorating your house. A few years ago if you were trying to go that route, you may have found yourself struggling to find enough furniture to do the job. But, not anymore.

Thankfully, the furniture market has caught on to the fact that people are trying to make less of an environmental impact when they are decorating their homes. For this reason, there is a whole new arena of options out there.

Recycled Kitchen Tables

The key to being able to go green with furniture like kitchen tables is to avoid using new wood metal or plastic. Most new items are made from new resources. That means more trees are being chopped down, and other virgin resources expended to make the new piece.

But, what about all those old pieces of furniture? Why are they going to the landfill when they could just as easily be used to create something new. That is exactly what the recycled kitchen tables market has realized.

Wood

There are two possible ways to be green when purchasing wooden kitchen tables. The first is to have tables that are made out of recycled wood. This is wood that is literally taken from something else and turned into a new piece of furniture. This could be from old barn wood or an old piece of furniture that was saved from a landfill. The other type of furniture out there is that made of sustainable woods. These pieces are made from trees that are quickly and easily replenished so there is not a major environmental impact to their being used.

Plastic

There is a lot of plastic in our world. There doesn't seem to be a carton or container that isn't made of this hard to biodegrade material. Thankfully, there are some people who are keeping a lot of that plastic out of the landfill and instead turning it into new furniture like kitchen tables. Think of how great it would be to have fashionable kitchen tables in your home and know that not only are they great looking but they were the reason many pounds of plastic was spared a trip to the landfill.

Metal

Even metal can be recycled and often to make magnificent kitchen tables. Wrought iron that has been used for a gate or other accent in a home or yard may live out its life as that particular item, but may be able to be cut down and used again to create new items, like kitchen tables. These pieces will not only make you feel good for recovering them and keeping them from becoming trash, but also because they will have a unique character that will make your tables one of a kind masterpieces.

While you may not think your choosing to go green with your kitchen tables is a big step in the grand scheme of things, think about what would happen if more and more people were to do the same thing. Each of those purchases compounds to use less new resources and to keep more of the old out of the landfill in the future.

Fixing Your Leaking Toilet

Let me explain how a toilet works. First when you go to flush the toilet a little arm pulls a rubber flapper up and lets the water drain into the toilet bowl. The water draining into the toilet bowl forces the old water out along with the number two or number one waste and extremities.

If the toilet sounds like it is running there is a good chance that the seal between the rubber flapper and the plastic rain at the bottom of the toilet is broken somehow. The sound you are hearing is water running around this ring and in to the toilet bowl.

This leak is actually causing no damage to the toilet itself but is wasting water. Hence the water bill will be a little higher if you don't fix the leaking toilet. The best way to find out if this is actually your problem is to take the toilet tank lid off. Then stick your hand down into the toilet bowl and press gently on the rubber flap.

If the water stops leaking or starts running faster this is your problem. Turn the water off to the toilet. There will be a shut off valve on the wall under your toilet bowl in the bathroom. After you turn the water off removed the plastic flap and examine it.

You will be looking for a warped toilet flap or of some sort or grooves on the flapper itself. Take the toilet flapper down to your local home improvement store and buy a new one. Go home and replace the new toilet flapper and this should solve 90% of your leaking toilet problems.

There is one more thing it could be. With the toilet tank lid off, check to see if water is overflowing into the little round plastic pipe. This plastic pipe should have a small hose running from the float valve assembly into it.

If the water is over flowing from the toilet tank into this little plastic pipe you will need to adjust the float.

First thing you will need to do is while the toilet is running lift up on the float lever arm. If the water stops you can simply bend the metal arm of the float lever. The purpose of bending the arm will force the float deeper into the water there for stopping the water from rising over the small tube in the center of your toilet.

There are few parts to a toilet and most parts can be purchased at your local hardware or home improvement centers. Toilet repairs like this can be made simple and the parts used to replace are inexpensive.

Happy Toilet Repairing.

Plumbers - Get Free PR and Grow Your Profits

Most plumbers do not think they will be able to get their stories into the press and so do not bother trying to get any free PR. This is a mistake, PR is a very powerful method of marketing for free and any business can get a massive amount of free PR which would normally cost a serious amount of money if it was done through paid advertising.

PR actually lends a lot more credibility than traditional paid advertising because when your story is featured in the editorial of your local newspaper, TV or radio station it carries a lot more weight.

There are plenty of people who have turned their businesses around just through using PR. Just by sending a simple one page press release to their local media they got a lot of free publicity and interest in their business. Follow the strategy below as one way that you can try to get some free publicity:-

Promote yourself as an expert in your field and make sure all your local media knows about you.
Use the world around you as a backdrop for what you have to say. For instance, the winter is a time when we all need to keep warm but in the current economic climate where money is tight we want to spend as little as possible to do so. As you are a plumber you could write a one page press release about how you can help home owners keep warm and save money at the same time and include tips on insulation and getting the most from their central heating systems etc. You may need to spend a bit of time doing some research, but if you assure the public that you have some genuine information that will help them you will find it is easy to get some free publicity.

Your local media is always on the look out for fresh, exciting and unusual stories to use, so get your imagination working and come up with some interesting stories to get that free publicity that could seriously increase your business.

Home Improvement Tip - Fixing a Squeaky Floor

Question: I have a floor that every single time I step on it I get the most annoying sound. I don't know what it does to me or why it bothers me so much. My kitchen floor squeaks and actually moves up and down if you are standing on it. The whole floor moves. How do I stop it from moving and squeaking. Help Me Greg!

Answer: It sounds like you have a broken floor joist. You are going to have to go under your house. If you have a basement this will be a little easier to fix. It is my guess that you don't have a basement or you would have seen the broken floor joist by now.

Have someone stand on the floor in the spot that squeaks and have them move up and down while you are under the house. Don't have them jump up and down while you are under the house. This could cause more damage to the structural framing of the floor. Once you are in the right position under the floor you can have them start moving slowly. What you are looking for is one of the floor joist that are moving.

If you see one of them moving. Look to see where the damage is. Is it a split, crack, wood rot or a big knot in the wood that has loosened up and fell out. Once you find the damaged floor joist you can now think about repairing it.

If you don't see any floor joist moving. Have the person on top start moving a little bit more and you can even have them jump on it a few times until you see something out of place. If you still don't see any broken floor joist. Start looking at the sub-floor, this will be plywood of some form, 1 x 6 or 2 x 6 materials.

What you are looking for is movement of any kind. Is there a separation or movement between the sub-floor and the floor joist. If you still can't find the problem maybe it is time to call in a professional.

The main thing you are going to be looking for is movement of any kind.

Most squeaky floors are caused from the sub-floor rubbing up and down on a nail. If you have carpeting and you have a squeaky floor you can do your best to locate a floor joist and screw right through your carpeting into the floor joist.

Inerrancy of the Bible - Are There Mistakes in the Bible

What does the word inerrancy main? Inerrancy would refer to text that is accurate and totally free of any errors or without any mistakes. Does this sound like any book that you have ever read or have knowledge of. Maybe there is a one sentence book that could fall into this category.

Most books however and even this article has mistakes. If I made a decision to base my life, my entire life and that of my children and grandchildren, I would want to make sure that it was accurate as possible.

Is the Bible, 100%, 90%, or even 50% accurate. Are these stories that were written by people many years ago and the lessons have been helpful but now need to be rewritten.

Does the Bible actually contain the will of God? Some scholars believe that certain sections of the Bible meet this criteria while others do not. How can these people judge if they are not God and how can we believe in this stuff is not true.

If the Bible was inspired by God but written by men, this could actually mean that God had complete control over writing the Bible or does this mean that the man wrote the Bible with gods inspiration. I'm inspired by God daily and often write about it, but don't seem to have enough followers to make it into the biblical Hall of Fame. I'm writing with inspired beliefs right now.

If there are errors in the Bible, how extensive or how many errors are there actually. There are actual stories that can be documented as historical facts. This doesn't mean the rest of the Bible is factual, nor does it mean it is historically inaccurate.

The Bible has some errors in it and some facts that we can prove but leaves us with the question, is this a book from the Creator of the universe or a book written by men, to make us believe, it was written by God and if so why are we still believe being in it. Why do some people read this book and other religious text daily? What motivates them to read holy Scripture regularly but doesn't seem to allow them enough time to find out if they are reading accurate information.

The biggest problem I have with the inerrancy of the Bible is the fact that most people tend to ignore certain truths and cling to their childhood beliefs about religion. If this is not the way or the truth, I would want to start looking for it, instead of following someone else's dreams or religious doctrine.

Glass Subway Tiles For Your Kitchen

When you talk about renovating or remodeling one area of or the entire house, the term glass subway tile is often mentioned. This is because the popularity of glass tiles has increased throughout the years. It has become a favorite of interior designers in creating innovative design styles for the home. If you want to find out more about them, specifically how to use them to create a fresh look for your kitchen, then this is the article for you.

Many people wonder if glass subway tiles can really be used for decorating purposes, considering they're breakable and seemingly unsuitable to be played around with. The kitchen is one of the very few places in this world where you can be yourself. In it, you can cook up a storm, dish out secrets with friends, hang out with the family, or enjoy solitude while whipping out a meal or reading the paper. This means that, first and foremost, your bathroom should look like the way you want it to. Your bathroom should be an expression of who you really are; it should be a celebration of your tastes and preferences. If you want to put glass subway tiles in your kitchen, you can do so without fear of it not being possible. Many people use glass tiles in their kitchens - and you can, too.

You can find several websites that offer glass subway tiles. There are different designs for you to choose from, the most common of which are the stained glass and mosaic designs. You can opt for either design in a glass subway tile, as long as you consider not only your taste but also your kitchen's needs. The stained glass design embraces an appearance that possesses bright, colorful streaks and swirls. It is of an opalescent nature and can be customized with every use. On the other hand, the mosaic design is rich in texture and color. It is of a transparent, semi-opaque nature; it is smooth in the front and rightly textured in the back to provide you with a more secure grip, with miter beveled edges for that e3asy angling on corners.

There are so many things you can do with glass subway tiles for your kitchen. You can use them as lovely, unique accents or backsplash in the counter area, breakfast table area, or any kitchen nook. You can even extend the design out into the hall, perhaps even into the bathroom or outside in the pool area. The only thing that can limit the possibilities of using glass subway tiles is your imagination.

You can very well use glass subway tiles as an alternative to ceramic tiles when it comes to designing an area of your house, particularly the kitchen. The two kinds of tiles have almost similar installation processes, not to mention maintenance requirements. A glass subway tile may break if it is dropped prior installation, but once it is installed, it becomes durable, as well as impervious to water, acids, and many other chemicals out there At http://www.glasssubwaytiles.com and More info At http://www.ceramictile-murals.com

Dangers Using Wood Stair Cleats - New Stair Construction

I would imagine most people don't even know what it wood stair cleat is, in construction we have so many words that describe the same thing. A stair cleat is another word for a thread bracket. In other words it's the part of the stairway that connects the stair stringer to the stair step. These have been used for years and over time, most of them will develop the same problem.

Most wood stair cleats loosened up and create a safety hazard. If the stairs are located outside in extreme weather conditions, for example, if it rains or snows a lot, extremely humid humid weather, or extremely hot and dry temperatures, your staircase might not last that long, if it is or isn't maintained properly. It's not a bad idea to use steel or concrete for stairways in these climates.

If you're ever walking up a set of stairs with wood cleats and the stair steps feel a little loose or wiggly, make sure you examined the stair cleats for safety. It's not uncommon for someone to be walking up or down a set of wood stairs and having the stair step or tread giveaway because the wood cleats has loosened.

If the wood stair cleats are nailed to the stair stringer, the nails can loosen up, causing it to become loose, as you walk up and down the stairs applying pressure to the stair cleat, this will create movement in between the stair step and the stair stringer. This could cause the cleat to crack, break and separate the connection between the stair step in the stair stringer.

I would suggest using metal brackets instead of wood cleats. The metal brackets will not crack or disintegrate like some wood cleats. Stair building brackets of course can loosen up and should be maintained regularly.

If you decide to use wood stair cleats, I would suggest using screws instead of nails and drilling holes in the wood stair cleats, most of the time this will prevent cracking the cleat. Try to use a thicker material for the stair cleat, for example using a 2 x 4 with lag screws and washers would be better than using a 1 x 4 with nails.

If you're walking up a set of stairs and a stair step feels loose, contact the owner of the property and let them know, they have a problem with their staircase.

Tips on Using Waffle Makers to Bake Great Tasting Waffles

There is nothing like a great tasting waffle. Today many people are choosing to buy waffle makers and start to try cooking waffles at home. But not everyone is an expert on cooking waffles and sometimes they can be disappointed in how their waffle attempts turn out. With that said, waffles are not that hard to make and by following a few tips around the batter and how you use the waffle maker you can change disasters into the best waffles you have tasted in your life.

A basic batter for a waffle contains flour, sugar, salt, milk and eggs. Some recipes say you should add oil to the butter and in fact it is a good idea to always add tablespoon of oil so that the waffle develops a good crust. So, if your waffles aren't crispy on the outside look at adding oil. You should also not beat the batter too much as this will make your waffles chewy. Stir the batter gently and only long enough for the dry ingredients to become moistened. Don't worry about any lumps because they will disappear during the cooking process.

An important consideration but often overlooked is how you use your waffle maker. When you place the batter on to the hot plates is of utmost importance. You will need to wait for you waffle maker to heat up otherwise the luke warm hot plates will give you a heavy and flat waffle. A good guide is to wait around 10 minutes for the maker to become hot enough.

When using waffle makers, it is also important to not use cooking spray on the hot plates. The spray will destroy the non-stick surface and make the waffle stick to the hot plates. Instead, use a paper towel moistened with vegetable oil and rub this gently over the plates.

Looking for information on waffle makers? Take a look at the Waffle Makers Guide for articles like: Waffle Makers - Cleaning Made Easy.

Home Inspection - What Questions Should I Ask

Now that you've decided to purchase a new home, you are probably very excited. However, the process gets a little more frustrating because there are a few hoops you have to jump through. At least it is worth it in the end, but to get to the end it is important to know a few things about the next step in the process. That next step is the home inspection.

You have to have the home inspected to learn of its condition. If there are severe problems, then you can see about having the price of the home reduced. Then again, you can ask the current owner to take care of those problems. It is important to do so because you do not want to pay too much for a home that isn't worth the amount. You also want to know what hazards exist so that severe injury doesn't happen on the property.

Ask questions

Once you have found a good home inspector to inspect your home, you need to tag along during the inspection. That way, you can ask questions and receive answers to those questions. You don't have to stand outside and wonder about anything. Jump in there and talk. Home inspectors have no problem answering your questions, no matter how stupid you may think your questions are. The truth is that there are no stupid questions.

Here are things you want to ask your home inspector during the home inspection:

- Putting all specifics aside, ask your home inspector about anything you may find you're concerned about. Everyone buying a home has different concerns, so be sure to let it all out.

- Ask the inspector if the drainage around the home's exterior is good. You can then ask how you should keep your basement dry, if there is one. You can even ask questions about prolonging the life of roofing and rectifying any other exterior issues.

- Some homes have abandoned oil tanks. You can ask the inspector if there are any signs of such tanks and it will be quite likely that the inspector will tell you to speak with your attorney if signs of oil tanks have been found.

- When it comes to electrical issues, ask the inspector if there is knob and tube wiring or aluminum wiring, especially if the home is old. Both of these can make home insurance hard to acquire.

- As for plumbing, ask the inspector if the sewer clean out cap is new. If it is, then there may be an issue. Ask the inspector how old the sewer pipes and the plumbing supply pipes are.

- For your heating system, ask the inspector what each of the different parts of the heating system are. Home inspectors like to show how much they know, so they'll be eager to tell you.

- Finally, you want to talk about the structure of the home. You want to make sure it is sturdy. They can tell you about what they can see, but remember that they cannot see what is inside the walls. Many damages within homes can be hidden.

What not to ask

The above serves as a great rundown of what questions to ask during your home inspection. However, there are also questions that shouldn't be asked. These questions include, "Should I buy this home?" "Do you think this home is right for me?" And, "Do you think the price is right?" A home inspector cannot tell you these things. The home inspector provides you with a guide that allows you to make an informed decision regarding whether or not you should purchase the home. The home inspector report also gives you bargaining power if you need it.

Basic Solar Panel Information

As the prices of energy continue to fluctuate, usually rise, there is a need for other alternative sources of energy. In the current scenario, the most preferable option is solar panels made at home, or DIY solar panels. These units capture solar energy, from the sun, and convert it into electrical energy. Solar power is very eco-friendly and at the same time a great source of completely free electricity. This is the best renewable resource out there, it is free, environmentally friendly, and with DIY instructions it is quite affordable to get started as well.

Forty years ago, the Americans realized the importance of renewable energy sources due to the infamous energy crisis in the 1970's and 1980's. The realization came about that the best way to reduce our dependence on non-renewable energy sources is through solar panels.

Initially, this can be a tedious task at the beginning but with the help of good guides who list all of the materials required to make your solar panel at home it is not nearly as challenging as most people believe.

The scientific process behind why these units work is very similar to the way that calculators operate. They trap the solar energy and convert it into electric energy, which can then be utilized for running household appliances.

It is far easier to make your solar panel than to spend money on getting a power system installed in your house which is why homemade units are becoming more and more popular.

These units are cheaper to build then a prefab model but still provide the same great benefits of saving your money as well as helping to save the environment.

The cheapest option for installing solar panels is to go with DIY Solar Panel Instructions which include detailed instructions, step-by-step video walk-throughs and even locations to get all of your materials as cheap as possible.

With DIY solar panel instructions you can be living off the grid, on free solar energy, for as little as a $200 start up cost.

Start saving money and the environment today, what are you waiting for?

Get Rid of Tiny House Ants

Because I run a website on pests, many people ask me, "How do I get rid of tiny house ants?" Getting rid of tiny house ants isn't as difficult as you might imagine.

Odorous House Ants (Tapinoma sessile) can be brown or black. Like all insects, they have six legs and also have a segmented oval body. They are typically 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. They have antennae. They swarm in early summer.

You know you're dealing with them if, when crushed, you smell a faint coconut odor.

Odorous House Ants have extremely large colonies, in some cases having more than 100,000 members and hundreds of breeding Queens.

They like to live in shallow surfaces and can often be found in mulch, debris, and rotting logs. They also can nest indoors preferring the cold dark spaces of walls, hot water pipes, and carpets. This makes getting rid of tiny house ants a problem.

While they don't bite or sting, they are a nuisance. They can also cause some minor house damage.

To get rid of tiny house ants, first remove all potential food sources. You should wipe up spills, keep counter tops clean, and store all food (especially sweets) in sealed containers.

Then, spray the ants that are visible to you with a mixture of water and peppermint essential oil. To keep the ants away, sprinkle coffee grounds around the kitchen.

Ultimately, you'll want to attack the nest though if you want to get rid the ants once and for all.

When you find a nest, use this mixture to destroy it. Mix 5 tspb. Of cornmeal with 3 tspb of bacon grease. Add 3 tspb. of baking powder and 3 packages of yeast. Then, put it on something like a canning jar lid and place the lid near the nest. The ants will literally eat themselves to death!

Getting rid of tiny house ants means remaining vigilant and attacking the problem with simple, everyday solutions.

The Basics of Hearing Aid Repair

A regular part of owning hearing aids is repair and maintenance, especially in the first year of use. But, proper handling of your new hearing aids can save you the trouble and money.

Why Do Hearing Aids Need Repairs?

One of the biggest reasons why hearing aids need to be repaired is simply earwax and moisture. This accounts for 3/4 of all hearing aid repairs, and you can prevent it. Earwax builds up on hearing aids, especially smaller models. This is why it is particularly important to clean and take care of your hearing aids properly.

Clean your hearing aids with a warm cloth or tissue. Never let water come into contact with them, because they contain sensitive electronic parts.

Aside from getting dirty, hearing aids most often need to be repaired because of the electronics. Receivers often need to be replaced. Over a long period of time, electronics wear out, and your hearing aids may need new wiring.

The best way to save money on costly repairs is to handle your hearing aids properly, and make sure you are keeping earwax and other dirt out of them.

How Often Do I Need To Get Repairs?

Usually, smaller hearing aids need more repair and maintenance than larger ones. This means that CIC, or completely-in-the-canal hearing aids are the most often in need of repair. It's not because they are fragile and break easily, but because they require more regular maintenance than other types of hearing aids. They are also most sensitive to wax buildup.

All hearing aids need regular repairs or maintenance. With in-the-ear hearing aids, you may have to have something on it repaired every year or 15 months. In-the-canal hearing aids will need to be repaired more frequently, from 9 months to a year. And, completely-in-the-canal hearing aids will probably have to be worked on every 7 to 9 months.

Where Should I Take Them?

It is usually recommended that you take your hearing aids to an audiologist for repair, rather than sending them to the supplier.

How Much Will It Cost?

It varies quite a bit. Older hearing aids cost more to fix than newer ones, because the parts may be hard to find. Also, you will have to pay more if you have to send it to the manufacturer for repairs, rather than having it done in-house.

You should expect to pay at least $100 for circuit changes, although it could be much more.
Warrantees And Guarantees

When buying a hearing aid, make sure that your dealer carries a good warrantee. Warrantees differ by manufacturer, but you should be able to find one that covers repairs for an extended period of time. All warrantees will cover repairs in case of shoddy workmanship or faulty parts.

There should at least be a one-year full coverage warranty. When you first start wearing hearing aids, there will be some routine check-ups and maintenance, and they should be covered by your supplier.

Hearing aid repairs are covered under some insurance plans, but are not usually covered. If you wear hearing aids, you should definitely look for insurance that will pay for your maintenance and repairs.

The most common causes for hearing aid repairs, moisture and earwax buildup, are entirely preventable. Make sure to clean them with each use, and you can save money!

Easy Garage Remodeling Projects

Many people don't have enough space in their house to store everything they need. One of the easiest ways to gain some extra space is to renovate your garage. Remodeling your garage is actually a very cost efficient way of getting an extra living room from your house. Few people still use their garage to park a car, and so it could be used for living space instead. By remodeling your garage you can encourage yourself to be much more organized as you have to stop storing everything in your garage.

Your garage could also form a beautiful workshop, home office or even recording studio if you wanted. Lots of people also turn their garage into a gym, or just into another living room. Just because you want to remodel your garage, that doesn't necessarily mean that you no longer want to park your car in there or store your tools there. Garages can be multifunctional rooms, allowing somewhere or the car, general storage and a home office.

Most garages are physically attached to the home and so it's fairly easy to install all the things that you will need, including heating, cooling, plumbing, and phone lines. You only need to have a plan, then you can do pretty much anything (budget permitting of course!)

If you don't want to lose any storage space when remodeling, then you could consider building a new storage unit building just behind your garage. This would allow you to store all of your sporting equipment fairly easily. Tools and other items from your garage would also be quite at home in this storage room.

When you are remodeling your garage you should also think about adding a room above the garage. This room could have a number of other uses, including a bedroom, family room or even a home cinema room! By adding this additional room you can add quite a lot of value to your home without having to alter the floor plan.

If you have decided that you need to remodel your garage but you don't know what you want to do, then just think about these few points for a minute.

You could convert your garage to form a laundry room instead of in your basement. This would mean that you don' need to go up and down stairs to do the laundry.

Many people convert their garages into music recording studios. If you have children that are interested in music then this could be a really valuable choice! Many bands started in home recording studios. Make sure that you use plenty of soundproofing so that your neighbors don't get annoyed!

Another popular idea is to make it into a gym. If you already have lots of exercise equipment but do not have enough space to store it, then putting it in your garage can make it much easier to use. The garage could come a brilliant place for daily exercise and training. This also means that you won't be bothered by the rest of the family.

Being specifically interested in workbench kit and workbench designs, Robert Carlton published a large number of news on this specific topic. From his documents on garage workbench plans the columnist affirmed his expertise in the field.

Can You Use Old Concrete To Build A Stairway

What a great idea using your old side walk or driveway to build a nice stairway for your front or back yard. Using the old concrete instead of sending it to the landfill. Wow talk about earth friendly. Who would have thought that using recycled concrete would create a beautiful center piece in your landscaping plans.

That's enough about that lets get to the nuts and bolts of building the stairs. I came across the idea by visiting one of our favorite breakfast stops in Fallbrook. I had been walking down these stairs for quite a while when it dawned on me that the stairs where kind of jagged. When I took a closer look I couldn't figure it out, What kind of building materials did they use.

Then I realized it was recycled concrete in other words someone's old side walk. They even used the old concrete to make some nice planter boxes and retaining walls. The whole area really looks nice. The landscaping created natural look with a old world look to it.

How do I build the stairs using recycled concrete? Simply put first thing you need to do is get some recycled concrete. If you are going to be tearing up a old sidewalk, driveway or patio then you won't have to look far.

If not you can contact some local general or demolition contractors. They would love to have someone haul away their concrete. The reason for this is they have to pay around five hundred dollars for every ten tons hauled away from the jobs they are working on.

The more recycled concrete you need the easier it will be to get it. If you need a lot you will be able to contact a concrete recycling plant and get the phone number to a local contractor that hauls broken up concrete to their plants. These people can drop off a large load if you have a large area to drop it.

Remember that most contractors don't want to be bothered because they are busy working or planning on working. The easier you can make it on the contractor the more likely you will get what you want from them. They usually aren't interested in doing extra work just to make you happy. You can get a lot by being courteous from most people.

Now that you have the concrete you can start building. The concrete will be stacked on top of the other concrete to form the steps. Depending on how long of a stairway you are building you will have to level the dirt and stack the recycled concrete to make the stairs.
